Stage 1: (BEGINNER STAGE) This will start with the basic fundamentals such as the history of the drum as well as its different uses. We’ll explore as well as demonstrate how different cultures throughout the world use the drum and other percussive instruments, for ceremonial purposes. We will also explore the meaning of the word itself (PERCUSSION) for example to strike with force or to strike in rhythmic patterns. With that in mind, it’s still necessary to reflect on some history as well as origin of percussion and how it all relates to how we’ve evolved as a people. Our ancestors used objects as well as their hands to strike hand-made drums, in order to communicate. At stage 1, it is our intent to begin to bridge the gap between now and then as it relates to culture; percussion will serve the vehicle. In this 1st stage we will focus more on the knowledge and history of percussion and less on effort and ability. This is because effort without knowledge would prove to be fruitless. |
